Two-Time Palme d’Or Winner Bille August has been tapped to direct "Armani: The King of Fashion," a feature biopic about the late Italian fashion designer legend, Giorgio Armani.
Produced by Andrea Iervolino (Ferrari), the project will follow the personal and professional evolution of Armani, widely regarded as among the most influential designers in 20th and 21st-century fashion.
Armani was an intensely private man but had a longstanding personal relationship with his business partner, the architect, fashion designer and businessman Sergio Galeotti, who died of complications from AIDS in 1985.
At this stage, it is not clear whether the film will take in Armani’s private life or focus solely on his work on the runway and red carpet. It is also not clear whether Iervolino has sought collaboration from the Armani family on the project.
Armani passed away on September 4, aged 91, due to liver failure. The icon was previously the subject of a 2015 short film by Martin Scorsese.
Bobby Moresco, who has teamed with Iervolino multiple times, is attached to write the screenplay for the Armani biopic.
August’s credits include "The Best Intentions," "Pelle the Conqueror," and "The Count of Monte Cristo".
Speaking about August, Iervolino described the filmmaker as an artist whose work is “distinguished by elegance, emotional intelligence and a remarkable respect for the lives he portrays.”
“Those qualities perfectly mirror Giorgio Armani’s own values: refinement, authenticity, vision and timeless excellence,” Iervolino said.
“This film is not simply the story of an iconic designer. It is the story of a man whose work has become part of Italy’s cultural identity and whose influence extends far beyond fashion. We wanted a filmmaker capable of honoring that legacy with sensitivity, intelligence and cinematic beauty.”
