The second edition of the Bardiya Film Festival opened Tuesday at Cairo Opera House’s Hanager Theater, honoring late Egyptian screenwriter Wahid Hamed.
The festival, held under the patronage of Egypt’s Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Social Solidarity, brings together filmmakers from across the Arab world and beyond. Organizers said more than 800 films were submitted to compete in the short film categories of five and 15 minutes, limited to works produced after January 2024.
The opening night featured tributes to Hamed, whose films left a lasting mark on Egyptian cinema, and the release of a commemorative book titled “Wahid Hamed.. Awan El Ward”.
Actress Elham Shaheen and director Marwan Hamed, the writer’s son, were among the prominent guests. Honorees included actress Hala Sedky, designer Reem El-Adl, and media figure Bossy Shalaby.
The jury, led by veteran cinematographer Said Shimi, will award prizes at the festival’s closing ceremony.
