The 76th British Academy Film Awards took place at the Royal Festival Hall in London on Sunday night.
All Quiet On The Western Front, The Banshees Of Inisherin, and Elvis all won top prizes, while Austin Butler, Cate Blanchett, and rising star Emma Mackey were among the celebrities heading home with the golden mask statuette.
The First World War German language drama “All Quiet on the Western Front” was the sweeping victor of the night, winning seven awards including Best Director, Best Film and Best Film Not in the English Language.
"German language film, we've been blessed with so many nominations, and winning this is just incredible," producer Malte Grunert said in his acceptance speech for best film.
"'All Quiet on the Western Front' tells a story of a young man who, poisoned by right-wing political nationalist propaganda, goes to war thinking it's an adventure, and war is anything but an adventure. That is one of the messages of Remarque's seminal novel and when we started embarking on this... that seemed a relevant message even 100 years after the book was published."
It won seven awards overall: best film, adapted screenplay, film not in the English language, director for Edward Berger, cinematography, sound and original score.
“The Banshees of Inisherin” about two feuding friends on an island off the coast of Ireland, was also favored at the event, winning both the supporting actor and supporting actress awards, as well as best original screenplay, among others.
“Everything Everywhere All at Once,” a favorite heading into next month’s Oscar, took home only one award, for best editing.
Heading into the star-studded event, “All Quiet on the Western Front” led with 14 nominations, followed by ten nominations apiece for “The Banshees of Inisherin” and “Everything Everywhere All At Once”. “Elvis” rounded out the pack of top contenders with nine BAFTA nods.
