James Cameron’s "Avatar: The Way of Water", the sequel to the worldwide 2009 blockbuster "Avatar", has received multiple at-home viewing release dates.

The 20th Century Studios/Disney sci-fi epic will be available to purchase on March 28, setting course for Prime Video, Apple TV, Vudu, and Movies Anywhere. Digital editions will be available in 4K Ultra HD quality with Dolby Atmos audio.

The release will come with more than three hours of additional bonus content, exploring the world of Pandora and the movie's unique production process. Highlights include deep dives on performance capture technology, Na’vi culture, Pandora’s underwater ecosystems, the intricacies of sound design, the Wētā FX visual effects team, returning cast members, new characters, and a featurette focusing on Spider (Jack Champion), the young human boy who wants to be a member of the Na’vi.

The 20th Century Studios and Lightstorm Entertainment production has achieved massive success since its release on December 16.

“Avatar: The Way of Water” has become the third highest-grossing film of all time with a global box office gross exceeding $2.2 billion. The movie is also the ninth highest-grossing film ever at the domestic box office with $670 million, looking to soon surpass Cameron’s “Titanic” ($674 million) for eighth.

“The Way of Water” has earned four Academy Award nominations, including best picture, best visual effects, best production design and best sound.

Avatar fans have been waiting thirteen years for its sequel, which takes place ten years after the original movie.

Like its predecessor, the follow-up’s success is attributed to its generation-spanning appeal as well as the incentive to watch the film in premium and 3D formats. On Imax screens, the movie has crossed $250 million. That’s more coinage than many films manage to earn in their entire theatrical runs.

Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña returned as Jake and Neytiri. They now live in Pandora with their family.

Sigourney Weaver, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, Oona Chaplin, Vin Diesel, Stephen Lang, Matt Gerald, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Dileep Rao, Giovanni Ribisi, and Kate Winslet also star in the movie.

Cameron, who has been working on the sequel since 2013, said previously that for the movie to be profitable, it will “have to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history. That’s your threshold. That’s your break even.”

The movie is the first of four “Avatar” sequels planned. An untitled third “Avatar” movie is set for release on December 20, 2024.
