At the 44th Sharjah International Book Fair, authors and novelists emphasized that storytelling serves as the memory of nations and a bridge to the future, preserving culture and identity across generations.
During a panel titled “Preserving Culture and Heritage Through Storytelling,” writers Shazia Khan, Bashayer Al Essa, and Dr. Ahmed Al Khouri discussed how stories nurture belonging, transmit values, and connect people to their roots.
Khan shared her experience writing children’s books that reflect Emirati life, saying stories help children “see themselves in their own world.” Al Essa highlighted writing in the Gulf dialect to strengthen cultural identity and engage young readers. Al Khouri reflected on his work documenting the UAE’s transformation, stressing that stories “record what documents cannot — the spirit of a nation.”
Speakers agreed that storytelling is not luxury, but an essential tool for preserving heritage and shaping awareness.
