On Christmas Day, an armed man was apprehended after breaking into Queen Elizabeth's residence Windsor Castle.

The Metropolitan Police responded to a security breach within the grounds of the castle where Her Majesty and many other members of the Royal Family are spending the Christmas holidays at around 8.30 a.m., according to Thames Valley Police. According to reports, the suspect, a 19-year-old Southampton male, was unable to gain access to any of the castle's structures and is currently in police custody.

"An investigation is ongoing following this event, and we are liaising with colleagues from the Metropolitan police," Superintendent Rebecca Mears said. The inpidual was detained on suspicion of trespassing on a restricted area and possessing an offensive weapon. He is currently being held in jail.

"We can affirm that security procedures were activated shortly after the inpidual entered the grounds, and that he did not penetrate any buildings. The event has been reported to members of the royal family. We don't believe the public is in any greater danger."

After being forced to cancel her festivities at her Sandringham estate in Norfolk for a second year owing to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the Queen is spending Christmas Day at the Berkshire palace, her first without her husband Prince Philip, who died earlier this year.

Her sons, Prince Charles and Prince Edward, as well as the Duchess of Cornwall and the Countess of Wessex, have joined her.

The Queen's speech, which was pre-recorded in Windsor's White Drawing Room, was transmitted at 3 p.m., as is customary.
