Secretary-General of Arab League, Nabil Fahmy, has urged the United States and Iran to take immediate action to de-escalate tensions and return to the negotiating table, warning of the grave risks posed by continued volatility in the region, particularly in the Arabian Gulf.
Fahmy emphasized that further escalation could plunge the region into a new cycle of violence that would be difficult to contain, resulting in losses for all parties involved.
He cautioned that the situation is approaching a critical stage that could spiral out of control, leading to mutual destruction and severe economic repercussions felt both regionally and globally.
The Secretary-General stressed that Iranian attacks targeting a number of Arab countries are completely unacceptable and strongly condemned.
He pointed out that Arab nations have made their opposition to war clear from the very beginning, and they should not bear the costs of its continuation or escalation.
Fahmy called for mutual commitment to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the United States and Iran last June. This includes respecting the freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with international law and UN Security Council Resolution 2817, and ensuring the strait is not used as leverage or a tool for economic blackmail.
The Arab League Secretary-General concluded by stressing that the current phase requires all parties to exercise wisdom and carefully weigh the consequences of escalation.
He reaffirmed that returning to dialogue and negotiations remains the only viable path to resolve outstanding issues and safeguard regional security and stability.
