Arab and Greek theatre practitioners affirmed that the stage remains humanity’s most powerful space for reflection, as it continues to confront existential questions of fate, justice, and freedom. They agreed that despite digital-era challenges, theatre endures as a living art that sustains the human spirit.

The discussion took place during a session titled “The State of Arab and Greek Theatre” at the 44th Sharjah International Book Fair, featuring Greek playwright Panayiotis Mentis and Emirati theatre director Talal Mahmoud.

Mentis emphasized that theatre does not compete with technology but transcends it, as it is “written to be lived, not just performed.” Mahmoud highlighted that Emirati and Arab theatre are cultural projects rooted in community engagement, crediting H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi for establishing a thriving theatrical movement that combines infrastructure, vision, and humanistic purpose.
