The Arab Cinema Center (ACC) has announced that acclaimed Egyptian actor and President of the Cairo International Film Festival, Hussein Fahmy, will be awarded its seventh Arab Cinema Personality of the Year Award, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the Arab film industry and his enduring impact on cinema both regionally and internationally.

The award will be presented during the Critics Awards for Arab Films, held on Saturday, May 16, from 5 to 7 PM at Plage des Palmes, on the sidelines of the Cannes Film Festival.

Commenting on the occasion, ACC Co-Founders Alaa Karkouti and Maher Diab stated, “This year, we’d like to express our appreciation of Fahmy’s efforts over the last few years, and throughout his career, to maintain and further elevate Egypt’s reputation as a central hub for filmmaking in the region.”

The Arab Cinema Personality of the Year Award continues the ACC’s mission to spotlight influential voices in the industry who have contributed to the growth and global recognition of Arab cinema.

This prestigious award is presented annually by the ACC to honor prominent figures whose work has significantly elevated Arab cinema’s presence on the global stage. Fahmy’s selection reflects a remarkable career spanning decades, during which he has shaped the cultural and artistic landscape of Egyptian and Arab cinema.

Since his reappointment as President of CIFF in 2022, marking his second tenure following his presidency from 1998 to 2001 , Fahmy has played a pivotal role in revitalizing the festival and reinforcing its international standing. Under his leadership, the festival has introduced new initiatives supporting emerging talent, restored Egyptian cinematic classics, and reestablished Egypt’s presence at the Marché du Film through the return of the Egyptian Pavilion, in collaboration with key industry partners.

Fahmy’s vision has also driven the expansion of Cairo Industry Days, including programs such as Cairo Pro-Meet and the Cairo Film Market, fostering stronger connections between Arab filmmakers and international industry professionals. His efforts have further extended to building strategic partnerships with major film institutions and festivals across China, opening new avenues for cross-cultural collaboration.

Beyond his leadership roles, Fahmy is one of the Arab World’s most celebrated actors, with a prolific body of work exceeding 200 titles across film, television, and theater. A graduate of the Higher Institute of Cinema in Cairo and holder of an MFA in directing from the University of California, Fahmy began his career behind the camera before rising to stardom as a leading actor. His diverse performances have spanned generations and genres, contributing to some of the most iconic works in Egyptian cinema.

His films have been widely recognized, with multiple titles featured on prestigious “Best 100 Egyptian Films” lists, underscoring his lasting influence on the region’s cinematic heritage. In parallel with his artistic achievements, Fahmy has also been actively engaged in humanitarian efforts, having served as a regional goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme.

In celebration of his achievements, Fahmy is also featured in the latest edition of Arab Cinema Magazine, to be published by the ACC and distributed during the 79th Cannes Film Festival. The magazine highlights leading figures and trends shaping the Arab film industry, offering international audiences insight into the region’s dynamic cinematic landscape.
