After the success of "F1," the biggest-grossing sports movie of all time and a 4x Oscar nominee, fans have been wondering whether there would be a sequel.
The question about the possibility of a sequel was raised at Apple TV press day on Tuesday.
Taking the question, Apple’s SVP of Services, Eddie Cue, read it to Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali who responded, “Stay tuned.”
“We’re going to tell you something more in the future,” said Domenicali who was on the stage at the Santa Monica Barker Hanger in the final session with Cue “We need to digest the success of this movie. If you want to think of a new one, it has to be very good.”
"F1" wasn’t just the biggest sports movie of all-time at the global box office with north of $631M, but it was also Brad Pitt’s highest-grossing movie and Apple Original Films top grossing theatrical release to date. It was distributed and co-marketed by Warner Bros.
Beamed Domenicali about the success of the pic and what it meant to the sport, “that FI would be able to be talked about in another dimension like Hollywood, we didn’t think was possible.”
Cue and Domenicali spoke to attendees about Apple’s new collaboration with F1 to stream the sport at no extra incremental cost to subscribers.
Cue spoke about how with Apple TV, there’s now one single place to watch F1, on all AppleTVs, iPhones, and everything including qualifying races, spring races, post-races.
4K and Dolby are the big pluses in the Apple broadcast of F1; the first time that the sport will be boosted in its visuals and sound.
Cue added, “We’re going to bring everything behind Apple — Apple Maps, Apple Music– we’re going to bring everything that Apple has to bear upon the fans. It’s an incredibly exciting time in doing this together.”
Commented Domenicali about the Apple partnership, “Relevancy is the key to our success, relevancy in the right platform.”
Said Cue about another F1 movie and its team-up with the sport with 24 races in two weeks” “We got 24 F1 movies on Apple TV. I don’t know what the ending is. It’s the best unscripted drama in the world.”
