The mission of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, which is currently operating in Al-Qarnah west of Luxor, in the archaeological cemetery area of El-Assasif, discovered a cache of 13 sarcophagi, including golden ones, in one of the largest discoveries in the current period, a source at the Ministry of Antiquities revealed.
The source pointed out that the sarcophagi were merely identified as they were not found in the cemetery, and will be opened by a competent committee to detect the mummies within.
The Minister of Antiquities Khaled al-Anani and the secretary-general of Supreme Council of Antiquities Mostafa al-Waziri are scheduled to arrive during the next hours to unseal the discovery and start identifying the mummies of the sarcophagi, unveiling reasons behind their presence in this area.
El-Assasif is located near the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, north of Deir el-Bahri and south of the necropolis of Dra' Abu el-Naga. It contains burials from the three dynasties including 18th, 25th, and 26th, comprising the periods from c.1550-525 BC.
