European Film Academy Awards announced Anthony Hopkins the Best Actor for his role in the drama “The Father”.
The Welsh actor plays a man suffering from dementia who refuses all assistance from his daughter as he ages.
The film was directed by Florian Zeller and starred Olivia Colman and Mark Gatiss along with Hopkins.
On the other hand, the German actor Franz Rogowski, who was also nominated in the category for the German-Austrian co-production “Große Freiheit”, was accordingly left empty-handed.
Five titles have been nominated for best feature film, including “The Father”.
The film “Titane” by director Julia Ducournau is also in the running. The horror film won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival this year.
Meantime, Hopkins is joining the cast of Zeller’s “The Son“ which also stars Hugh Jackman, Laura Dean, Vanessa Kirby, and Zen McGrath.
Zeller and "The Father" co-writer Christopher Hampton adapted "The Son" from Zeller’s acclaimed stage play.
“The Son” focuses on adolescent depression, and follows Peter (Jackman) as his busy life with his new partner Emma and baby is unsettled by the arrival of his ex-wife, Kate (Dern), and their troubled and angry teenage son, Nicholas.
