Two-time Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins is set to star in "A Visit To Grandpa’s", an adaptation of the coming of age story by celebrated Welsh author Dylan Thomas.
DJ Caruso, who recently directed Hopkins in biblical film Mary, is in the director’s chair and WestEnd Films is aboard for sales with talks continuing at the TIFF market.
The pic will follow a young boy sent to spend a summer with his charismatic and wildly eccentric grandfather on a remote Welsh farm.
Expecting dull days and strict rules, the boy instead stumbles into a world of delightful chaos and imagination – where outrageous stories are spun, and a world of wonder, memory, and mischief unfolds.
Anthony Hopkins said: “This is a powerful and profoundly beautiful story, one that allows me to return to my Welsh roots while exploring the remarkable vision and prose of Dylan Thomas. It is a privilege to collaborate once again with DJ, with whom I share a deep creative bond.”
Director DJ Caruso, whose credits also include xXx, series The Shield and I Am Number Four, commented: “On a windswept set in Morocco, Sir Anthony and I fell into a conversation about Wales, its culture, and the brilliance of Dylan Thomas, who could paint entire worlds with nothing more than the rhythm of a sentence. That moment sparked my creative fire and drew me back to A Visit to Grandpa’s, a story that lodged itself in my bones twenty-five years ago, when I first read it. To share this journey with Sir Anthony, bringing Dylan Thomas’s vision from the page to the screen, is one of the great honors of my directorial life. The film celebrates the transformative connection and enduring power of family.”
Production is set to begin March 2026. Pic will be shot in Wales and is produced by Welsh producer Huw Penallt Jones; with Hannah Leader (Blinded By The Light) and Amory Leader (Mary).
The film is a European co-production with Adler Entertainment and U-Media.
