Angelina Jolie is reprising her role as the evil fairy Maleficent in a third live-action movie for Disney.
Released in 2014, Maleficent is a live-action retelling of 1959’s "Sleeping Beauty". The movie, directed by Robert Stromberg, starred Jolie in the titular role, while Elle Fanning played Aurora/Sleeping Beauty, Sharlto Copley played Stefan, Lesley Manville played Flittle, Imelda Staunton played Knotgrass, Juno Temple played Thistlewit, and Sam Riley played Diaval.
Jolie was also an executive producer on Maleficent, which made $758.5 million at the global box office based on a budget of approximately $180 million.
A sequel, "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil", followed in October 2019, with Joachim Rønning taking over directing duties and Jolie, Fanning, Staunton, Manville, Riley, and Temple reprising their respective roles in the pic.
It also added newcomers Michelle Pfeiffer as Queen Ingirth, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Conall, and Ed Skrein as Borra joined the cast.
The synopsis of the sequel reads: “Maleficent travels to a grand old castle to celebrate young Aurora’s upcoming wedding to Prince Phillip. While there, she meets Aurora’s future mother-in-law — a conniving queen who hatches a devious plot to destroy the land’s fairies. Hoping to stop her, Maleficent joins forces with a seasoned warrior and a group of outcasts to battle the queen and her powerful army.”
"Maleficent: Mistress of Evil" made slightly less than the first movie at the global box office, bringing in $491.7 million off of a budget of $186 million.
