Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie will portray American-born Greek soprano Maria Callas in the biopic "Maria".

The movie is based on true accounts of the tumultuous, beautiful, and tragic story of the world’s greatest opera singer, relived and re-imagined during her final days in 1970s Paris.

It is helmed by Jackie and Spencer director Pablo Larraín in a continuous focus on some of the most famous women in modern history.

The movie was written by Spencer scribe, Oscar nominee Steven Knight.

The filmmaker’s brother and creative partner Juan de Dios Larraín will produce for Fabula Pictures, along with Lorenzo Mieli for The Apartment Pictures, a Fremantle Company, and Jonas Dornbach for Komlizen Film.

Jolie has most recently appeared in Marvel’s "Eternals" and Warner Bros.' "Those Who Wish Me Dead". She’s currently in post-production on her fifth movie as a director, "Without Blood".

The movie is the first under a new three-year deal she signed with Fremantle.
