Angela Bassett is reprising her role as CIA Director Erika Sloane from 2018’s "Mission: Impossible – Fallout" in the eighth movie in the Mission: Impossible franchise — now known as "Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning".
The eighth entry serves as “Part Two” to 2023’s “Dead Reckoning” and is scheduled to be released on May 23, 2025. It was originally set for 2022 but was delayed multiple times by the coronavirus pandemic and the SAG-AFTRA strike.
The plot of the new movie, from Paramount Pictures and Skydance, remains under wraps. Most recently garnering multiple Oscar nominations and grossing over $567MM worldwide with "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning", the spy action franchise of course centers on Tom Cruise’s Impossible Missions Force agent Ethan Hunt, who with his team, has embarked on assorted globe-trotting missions to avert global disaster.
In addition to Bassett, the returning cast will include Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Hayley Atwell, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, Henry Czerny, Greg Tarzan Davis, Mariela Garriga, and Indira Varma.
Newcomers to the franchise include Hannah Waddingham, Janet McTeer, Holt McCallany, Katy O’Brian, Nick Offerman, and Tramell Tillman.
Christopher McQuarrie is back as director and co-writer after helming “Rogue Nation,” “Fallout” and “Dead Reckoning.” He previously collaborated with Cruise on the “Jack Reacher” franchise as well as “Top Gun: Maverick.” The script is written by McQuarrie, Bruce Geller and Erik Jendresen.
Cruise and McQuarrie serve as producers, with Chris Brock, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Tommy Gormley, Don Granger, Susan Novick executive producing, and Gina Hallas co-producing.
Currently, Bassett stars as LAPD patrol sergeant Athena Grant on ABC’s "9-1-1", which returned for its eighth season in September.
On the film side, the Honorary Oscar and Emmy winner was most recently seen starring opposite Millie Bobby Brown in the fantasy pic "Damsel", which was Netflix’s most-watched in the first half of this year.
The actress lends her voice to Laika’s forthcoming animated film "Wildwood" and will also soon be seen starring opposite Robert De Niro in Netflix’s political thriller series "Zero Day".
