Paramount is updating the classic drama “An Officer and a Gentleman” with Miles Teller set to star.

Teller will take on the lead role in the remake of the 1982 classic starring Richard Gere, which was nominated for six Academy Awards, winning the best original song prize for “Up Where We Belong” and marking Louis Gossett Jr.’s historic achievement of becoming the first Black Best Supporting Actor Oscar winner.

“An Officer and a Gentleman” is centered around Gere’s Zack Mayo, an aspiring Navy aviator who clashes with his hard-nosed drill instructor, Gunnery Sgt. Emil Foley (Gossett) while navigating a budding romance with Paula (Debra Winger), a factory worker with dreams of getting out of her small town.

The Taylor Hackford-directed romantic drama was also a box office smash, earning $190 million globally.

Dana Fox penned the latest draft of the script for the new movie, following a draft written by Matt Johnson. Temple Hill is producing the project.

It’s a return to the cadet life for Teller, who starred as hotshot Navy pilot Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, son of the beloved Goose in 2022’s “Top Gun: Maverick”.

The long-awaited sequel was a massive hit at the box office, grossing over $1.4 billion worldwide and nabbing six Oscar nominations, including a best picture nod.

Since making his screen debut in 2010’s “Rabbit Hole,” Teller has built a resume that also includes the Oscar-winning drama “Whiplash,” “The Spectacular Now” (for which he won the Dramatic Special Jury award for acting at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival), Paramount’s “Footloose” remake, as well as the Godfather series “The Offer” for Paramount+.

He is currently in production on A24’s “Eternity” and just wrapped production for Lionsgate’s “Michael,” the Michael Jackson biopic, which is set to release in 2025. Up next he will star in and executive produce Skydance’s “The Gorge,” a high-action genre-bending love story for Apple, directed by Scott Derrickson and co-starring Anya Taylor-Joy.
