Amy Winehouse Biopic "Back to Black" First Look Unveiled

The first look at Amy Winehouse's biopic “Back to Black”, starring Marisa Abela as the late music icon, has been unveiled.

Jack O’Connell stars alongside Abela as Winehouse’s husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, Eddie Marsan stars as Winehouse’s father, Mitch Winehouse, with Juliet Cowan as Winehouse’s mother, Janis Winehouse-Collins. Lesley Manville plays Winehouse’s grandmother, Cynthia Winehouse.

The logline reads, “‘Back to Black’ is a never-before-seen glimpse into Amy Winehouse’s early rise to fame and the release of her groundbreaking studio album, ‘Back to Black.’ Told from Amy’s perspective, the film is an unapologetic look at the woman behind the phenomenon and the relationship that inspired one of the most legendary albums of all time.”

“Fifty Shades of Grey” filmmaker Sam Taylor-Johnson directs the movie from a script by Matt Greenhalgh. The two previously collaborated on 2009’s “Nowhere Boy,” a John Lennon biopic starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the young Beatle.

Alison Owen and Debra Hayward produce via Monumental, while Nicky Kentish-Barnes executive produces alongside Ron Halpern and Joe Naftalin on behalf of Studiocanal.

From Studiocanal and Monumental Pictures, production for “Back to Black” launched in January. 

The movie marks the first biopic about the Winehouse and was made with the support of the Amy Winehouse estate, Universal Music Group, and Sony Music Publishing 

With her sultry mix of soul, R&B and pop, Winehouse is considered one of the greatest singers of the 21st century, despite only having released two studio albums. 

Winehouse, who had a public battle with substance abuse and mental illness, died on July 23, 2011, due to alcohol poisoning. Over her career, she sold more than 30 million records worldwide and won five Grammy awards.

After the singer’s death, numerous documentaries about her life and legacy have emerged, including the Oscar winner in 2015 for best documentary feature, “Amy,” as well as the 2021 BBC TV film “Reclaiming Amy.” The biopic was first announced to be in development in 2018.

“Back to Black” will premiere in the United States on May 10, the U.K. and Poland on April 12, Germany and the Netherlands on April 18, France on April 24, and New Zealand on April 25.
