Ancient houses in Old Cairo are a reflection of the cultural and civilizational heritage of previous eras. However, the passage of time and neglect have severely damaged some of these houses, leaving them in need of comprehensive restoration to return to their former glory and play a vital role in their surrounding community.

Beit Yakan is a 17th-century house that underwent private restoration in Darb el Labbana. It is situated on Souk El-Silah Street in the Al-Darb Al-Ahmar area. After undergoing a comprehensive restoration process, it has become one of the most beautiful houses in the area.

The name "Yakan" comes from the word "Yajn," of Turkish origin, meaning "the sister's son." The house was owned by the nephew of Muhammad Ali Pasha, who gave his sister's sons several homes in this area. Thus, it was known at that time by the name of Al-Yakiniah.

Over time, the area's features changed, and some of these houses were destroyed. However, Yakan house remained. The ownership of the house changed hands several times until recent years, when the last owner took the initiative to restore and transform it into a cultural center in the heart of Old Cairo.

It now serves as the headquarters for its renovator's professional practice, the Turath Conservation Group, and its NGO, the Center for Revitalization of the City. The center organizes community events and workshops that focus on heritage, art, and culture. Beit Yakan is managed by Dr. Alaa Habashi.
