Egyptian director Alaa Mahmoud expressed her joy over her short film "1+1", reaching a critical milestone following its screening for the first time in Paris.
“I'm thrilled that my first short film, 1+1, screened for the first time in Paris at the Festival Mon Premier Film, which has tremendous academic and educational backing. This gives us assurance that our hard work has paid off, she said in a statement.
She added, "I wish I was there watching the film with the audience so I could hear their feedback”.
Mahmoud’s short screened in Paris at the Festival Mon Premier Film — which ran from June 11th to the 15th — as one of 19 films from nine Arab, Asian, and European countries, which screened at the festival.
The film stars British award-winning actor Amir El-Masry and beloved Egyptian actress Sarrah Abdelrahman and tackles the physical and moral effects of war.
After the great war decimated the city, only a man and a woman from the opposite parties remain. Both have to live in conflict between fighting and living in peace.
Previously, it screened at the Aswan International Women's Film Festival, Meta Film Festival, Tripoli Film Festival, and Meta Dubai Film Festival.
Mahmoud graduated from the Higher Institute of Cinema in Cairo and is known for her first short film — "1+1".
While studying at the institute, she worked as an assistant director and was selected among 10 female directors from as many countries for an artistic residency to develop a script at the 2019 International Women's Film Festival in Tunisia.
She also hails from an artistic family, with her uncle being the late comedian Alaa Waley El-Din.
Currently, Mahmoud is working on a new project titled "My GrandMother's Dress."
