Ahead of AFCON: Egyptian Museum Opens Sports Exhibition

Ahead of African Cup of nations 2019, Minister of Antiques Khaled El-Anany opened a temporary exhibition in Egyptian Museum to display different sports throughout Egyptian history under the name of "Sports through eras".

Ancient Egyptians encouraged their children from an early age to play sports in order to keep fit.

The museum will display sports, which Ancient Egyptians were interested in such as running, jumping gymnastics, football, archery and equestrian.

Moreover, they were obsessed with wrestling, fencing, boxing and weightlifting, in addition to water sports that included swimming, kayaking and fishing. Their practices are engraved on the walls of tombs and valleys.

Minister of Tourism Rania A. Al-Mashat attended the opening along with Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhy.

President of Museum sectors Elham Salah said that the exhibition will run until August.

Meanwhile, Egyptian Museum manager Sabah Abd El-Razek added that the exhibition include 96 antiques chosen from the Egyptian Museum and other ones including the Islamic Art, Mohamed Ali Palace and the Gayer-Anderson Museums.

80 antiques, picked from Egyptian Museum, include statue of Amenhotep II who mastered all kinds of sports and equestrian. Another 2 statues of hunting traps are chosen from Mohamed Ali palace and Mercury statue, holding Olympic flame from Gayer-Anderson Museum.

Also, a drawing of "tahtib" on a plate made of porcelain and sports paintings from Beni Hassa and Theban Tombs in Luxor.
