A TV adaptation of “Afterlife with Archie” is currently in the works at Disney+.
The project has received a script-to-series commitment at the streamer, meaning that if the script is well received, it would trigger a straight-to-series order.
It is based on the comic book of the same name by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla.
The one-hour drama reimagines "the beloved town of Riverdale as an apocalyptic, nightmare-fueled hellscape overrun with flesh-eating zombies," per the official logline.
Aguirre-Sacasa is writing and executive producing via Muckle Man Productions.
Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman will executive produce on behalf of Berlanti Productions. Jon Goldwater of Archie Comics Studios also executive produces along with Jimmy Gibbons of Muckle Man.
Warner Bros. Television, where both Muckle Man and Berlanti Productions are under overall deals, will be the studio.
Aguirre-Sacasa and Berlanti previously collaborated on the series “Riverdale,” which served as a dark reimagining of the Archie comics rife with murder, mystery, and jingle jangle.
The show aired for seven seasons on The CW and remained highly popular throughout its run.
In addition to his work on “Riverdale,” Aguirre-Sacasa serves as chief creative officer for Archie Comics.
He and Robert Hack also created the comics “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” which Aguirre-Sacasa developed into a Netflix series that aired for two seasons.
He and Michael Grassi developed the “Riverdale” spinoff Katy Keene as well. Berlanti Productions and WBTV produced all of the shows.
