English actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson has recently joined the cast of the upcoming remake of Robert Eggers’ silent horror movie “Nosferatu“.
Simon McBurney and Ralph Ineson also are joining a cast that includes Anya Taylor-Joy, Lily Rose-Depp, Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Willem Defoe, and Emma Corrin will also star in the Focus Features project.
Eggers serves as writer and director of "Nosferatu", while Jeff Robinson, John Graham, Eggers, Chris Columbus, and Eleanor Columbus are producing.
“Nosferatu”, which was released in 1922, is loosely adapted from Bram Stoker’s famous novel “Dracula“.
"Nosferatu" is derived from an archaic Romanian name for a vampire, following a copyright spat with the estate of Bram Stoker, the Irish novelist who wrote the Dracula novel in 1897. Murnau’s vampire was renamed Count Orlok.
The project was first announced in 2015, just after the premiere of “The Witch” at the Sundance Film Festival.
"Nosferatu" has been in development for six years; it was suspended in the middle for Eggers to shoot “The Lighthouse” and the Viking drama “The Northman”.
In the new reimagining, Nosferatu is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman (Depp) in 19th-century Germany and an ancient nocturnal Transylvanian count (Skarsgård) who stalks her, bringing untold horror with him.
Production is currently underway in Prague. Focus will distribute the movie domestically and Universal Pictures International will handle it internationally.
Taylor-Johnson next will be seen starring as the titular superhero in Marvel’s "Kraven the Hunter". He recently wrapped production on the action-adventure movie "The Fall Guy", reteaming with director David Leitch, who directed him in "Bullet Train".
Taylor-johnson's credits also include Christopher Nolan’s "Tenet" and the action-spy movie "The King’s Man", a prequel to the Kingsman franchise.
