Egyptian security forces killed 9 terrorists in a shootout during a raid on hideouts in El-Obour and 15th May Cities, the Interior Ministry said Wednesday in a statement.

The statement added that the terrorists included a member of Lewaa al-Thawra movement named Mahmoud Gharib, who has been proved to be involved in assassinating Brigadier General Adel Rajai in an exchange of fire with security forces in Sadat City.

According to the statement, the targeted terrorists were planning to participate in several terrorist operations to intimidate citizens, spread chaos, and negatively affect security and economic conditions of the country.

The police said the national security spotted his hiding place according to trusted information.

Several arms were seized during the operation including 6 machine guns, 2 birdshot rifles, an explosive device and bullets.

The operation comes as part of the Interior Ministry’s efforts to combat terrorist groups and hunt down the runaway terrorists who plan to destabilize the state’s security and stability.

Investigations are still ongoing to identify the terrorists.

Egypt’s security forces have been waging a war over the past four years against an Islamist terrorist insurgency, mostly in North Sinai, that has seen hundreds of security personnel killed, as well as hundreds of terrorists killed in security campaigns.

Terrorism has been plaguing Egypt since 2013 in response to mass protests against his government and his currently outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group.

Terror attacks, killing hundreds of policemen and soldiers in the restive North Sinai province, have gradually spread to other provinces in recent years.

Most of these attacks were claimed by a Sinai-based group affiliated with the regional Islamic State militant group.
