Egyptian security forces killed six terrorists and seized a large amount of arms during a raid on a hideout in the vicinity of Bahariya Oasis, the Interior Ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

According to the statement, the targeted terrorists were planning to participate in several terrorist operations to intimidate citizens, spread chaos, and negatively affect security and economic conditions of the country.

The National Security Agency received a tip-off that a terrorist cell is taking shelter in a tent surrounded by a number of high mounds near Bahariya Oasis to plan terrorist attacks.

Police raided the tent and engaged in a shootout with the terrorists, killing six of them, according to the statement. Several arms were seized during the operation including machine guns, 2 birdshot rifles and bullets.

The operation comes as part of the Interior Ministry’s efforts to combat terrorist groups and hunt down the runaway terrorist elements who plan to destabilize the state’s security and stability.

Investigations are still ongoing to identify the terrorists.

Egypt’s security forces have been waging a war over the past four years against an Islamist terrorist insurgency, mostly in North Sinai, that has seen hundreds of security personnel killed, as well as hundreds of terrorists killed in security campaigns.
