Nine Pakistani police officers have been killed after armed militants attacked a security checkpoint near a dam construction site in Balochistan province, southwestern Pakistan, local authorities said on Tuesday.
Abdul Quddus, a senior regional official, told AFP that nine police personnel were killed and others were missing following the attack on a checkpoint responsible for protecting the Mangi Dam construction project. The provincial government confirmed the death toll.
According to Geo News, the attackers stormed the police post in the Mangi area of Ziarat district, triggering an armed confrontation that resulted in the deaths of nine officers.
Authorities said the attackers took five police personnel with them after the assault, while the bodies of those killed were transferred to a district hospital.
Pakistan's Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi strongly condemned the attack, describing it as an act carried out by terrorists allegedly backed by India, and praised the officers who lost their lives.
