9 Antique Coins Seized in Cairo Int'l Airport

Cairo International Airport's antiquities unite seized nine antique coins that date back to different periods, and a copper Candelabrum that dates back to Khepe Ismail's lifetime.

Dr. Mostafa Waziri, the secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said that the artifacts were among the luggage of a passenger, and once the authorities suspect that the seized pieces could be archaeological ones, they followed all legal procedures.

On his side, Hamdy Hammam, the head of the Central Administration of Seized Antiquities Unit at the Egyptian Ports, that the seized antiquities included three gold coins date back to the Byzantine period.

One of them carries a portrait for Constantine II while wearing a crown and holding a cross. The coin also carries Byzantine writings.

Regarding the rest of the coins are metal ones: three are drachmas, two are half drachmas, and an anonymous one. All of them carry a portrait for Zeus on one side, and an eagle on the other side and some writings in Greek.
