On Monday, 45th Cairo Film Festival screened "Back to Alexandria" film as part of its "Made in Egypt" special screenings.
The screening was attended by the film's director Tamer Ruggli, and Hazem Ehab who participated in the film.
The film's story revolves around Sue, who is acted by the veteran and iconic Nadine Labaki, who receives tragic news that her mother is on her deathbed after suffering from a stroke. Sue feels despair as she would be connected to the past, and traumatic experiences that she fled years ago.
Sue finds herself facing a harsh face-off with the past, and the echoes of her mother. She recalls her mother's actions, comments, demands, and directions. Although Sue attempts to escape from everything her mother does, she gradually starts to look like her mother.
She communicates with her aunt Inji, her aunts who are known for their elderly, silly talks and comments.
On her road to Alexandria to meet her mother, Sue finds the courage to face her mother's ghost, and soul with everything she hates, love, despair, and forgiveness.
She admits it. She forgives her mother but doesn't love her. The moment the soul of her mother leaves, the moment the death of the mother is declared.
Sue whispers "Don't go, mom" but it is too late. Sue understands what her mother hates like the smell of 55555 scent.
She feels freedom for the first time in her life and bids a final farewell to her past life, and Alexandria.
The film presents breathtaking and impressive vintage-influenced images and a warm cocktail of music.
