Two police officers and a suspect were killed in a shooting in El Monte City, southern California, according to the US authorities late on Tuesday.

The authorities added that the policemen were shot while dealing with a stabbing.

"The city of El Monte is saddened and shocked by tonight's tragic shooting that killed two of our own police officers,” the police said.

The two officers who were shot were taken to the LAC-USC Medical Center where they died due to their injuries, the authorities said.

The suspect in the shooting, an unidentified man, was also killed during the exchange of gunfire, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

The names of the police officers were not released. Local media outlet KTLA said that one of the officers was a 22-year veteran of the El Monte Police Department while the other had been a member of the police force for less than a year.

Last month, 21 people, including 19 children were killed in a mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, and the other in a New York supermarket that left 10 black people dead.

The two attacks led to pushing the US Congress to enact stricter arms control laws.

These incidents contributed to launching the call for protests that were planned to be organized in hundreds of locations.
