The archaeological unit at Cairo International Airport managed to seize 203 antique coins dating back to different eras of ancient Egyptian times, including Greek, Roman, and Byzantine, in a possession of a passenger.
Hamdi Hammam, Head of the Central Administration of Ports and Archaeological Units explained that as soon as the archaeological unit was informed, a committee of specialized archaeologists was formed headed by Dr. Sherine Ramadan, Director of the Archaeological Unit at passenger terminal No. 3, who in turn examined the coins and prepared a technical report, stressing that the examination and inspection process confirmed the coins are antiques and subject to the Antiquities Protection Law No. 117 of 1983 and its amendments, so all legal measures will be taken in this regard.
Hanaa Al-Mashoor, Director General of the Archaeological Units Center at Cairo Airport, explained that the coins are a group of foreign, Egyptian and Arab coins that include 36 coins from the Greek era, 58 coins from the Roman era, a coin from the Byzantine era, and 108 coins of different shapes and sizes.
