The opening day of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) witnessed an extraordinary turnout, welcoming more than 20,000 visitors from Egypt and around the world, in a scene that reflected the immense global fascination with the treasures of ancient Egyptian civilization.

Dr. Ahmed Ghoneim, Chief Executive Officer of the Grand Egyptian Museum Authority, said in an interview with Naglaa El-Gebaly on Extra News that this remarkable attendance was a natural result of the extensive promotional campaigns—both domestic and international—that accompanied the museum’s historic inauguration ceremony, which President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi attended alongside kings, presidents, and world leaders.

“The enthusiasm we witnessed today confirms that the Grand Egyptian Museum is not just a cultural landmark, but a global destination,” Dr. Ghoneim said. “Our mission is to provide every visitor with an exceptional and seamless experience that reflects the grandeur of this monumental institution.”

Dr. Ghoneim noted that the number of visitors on the first day ranged between 15,000 and 20,000, with final figures to be confirmed by the ticketing management company. He added that entry might be temporarily regulated at times to ensure smooth movement within exhibition halls and maintain a comfortable experience for all guests.

Commenting on the large crowds, Dr. Ghoneim said the turnout was “a natural expression of the public’s deep passion for Egyptian heritage.” He explained that many visitors had long awaited the opportunity to stand before the treasures they had only read or heard about—including the golden mask of Tutankhamun, Khufu’s Solar Boat, and the statue of Queen Hatshepsut.

Dr. Ghoneim also announced that regular visiting hours are from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, while on select days, the museum will remain open until 9:00 PM to allow for evening visits. He added that Wednesdays and Saturdays will feature special night shows and cultural displays, offering visitors a new way to experience the museum’s ambiance after dark.
