16 Artifacts Seized before Smuggling at Safaga Port

Authorities at Safaga Port, alongside the concerned units of Antiquities succeeded in seizing 16 artifacts before smuggling.

Dr. Mostafa Waziri, the Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said that once the concerned unit of antiquities at the port received a report of the possibility of seizing artifacts, the unit started studying the pieces to make sure of their historical and archaeological nature.

Shortly, the unit's experts confirmed that all the seized pieces are antiquities and their ownership is now for the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.

On his side, Hamdy Hamam, the head of the Central Administration of Seized Antiquities Unit, said that the number of seized artifacts reached 16, all of them belong to the Ancient Egyptian periods.

Hamam added that they included some statues from wood and bronze, funerary masks, and amulets from faience, wood, and covered with gold, alongside other pieces.
