Michigan has recorded nearly 1,000 cases of Cyclospora infection in the largest outbreak of the parasitic illness in the state's history, with no deaths reported so far.
State health officials said the number of confirmed cases has risen to 992, including around 40 hospitalizations, as investigators work to identify the source of the outbreak. Similar infections have also been reported in 28 US states, including Ohio.
Michigan's chief medical executive said preliminary evidence suggests the cases are linked, although the contaminated food source responsible for the outbreak has not yet been identified.
Cyclospora is an intestinal parasite spread through contaminated food or water. The infection typically causes prolonged watery diarrhea, which can last for several weeks if left untreated
