At least 10 people have been killed and 17 remain missing after a gas explosion triggered a tunnel collapse at a hydropower project in India's northeastern state of Sikkim, near the Chinese border, according to officials on Tuesday.
The explosion occurred on Monday inside a tunnel under construction at the 500-megawatt Teesta hydropower project in Samardung village, around 40 kilometers from the state capital, Gangtok.
Local officials said survivors reported hearing a powerful blast before debris buried part of the tunnel, trapping dozens of workers inside. Rescue teams are continuing search operations as authorities investigate the cause of the explosion.
