"Zewail City of Science and Technology is based on Egypt's National Scientific Renaissance Project designed to captivate the imagination of Egyptians, inspire their enthusiasm, and demonstrate the strength of science in building the future," said its late founder, Dr. Ahmed Zewail.
Dr. Sherif Sedqi, CEO of Zewail City for Science and Technology, held a press conference to announce the latest developments and achievements in the city recently.
City's goals:
"We are working on preparing a new generation capable of innovative critical thinking, mastering science and basic, linking academic studies with industry, building entrepreneurial spirit, and delivering results that have an effective impact on society." Dr. Sedqi said.
He pointed out that the main components of the city lies in three basic buildings, namely the University of Science and Technology, research institutes, the pyramid of technology, referring to the school of Zewail for the preparation of the healthy generation.
Accepted certificate:
The total number of accepted certificates is 55% of the total number of admitted students, and the secondary education is 23%, Al Azhar secondary 3%, STEM 9%, IGCSE 7%, American certificate 1%.
The CEO also confirmed that the percentage of students admitted from different schools is 78.6% of the public schools, 17.9% and 3.5% respectively.
He referred to the distribution of students on academic programs is as follows: nanotechnology, space engineering, biomedical science, geophysics and the universe, new energy, communications engineering, environmental engineering, nanoscience, materials science, and bioenergy.
The CEO said that the total actual cost per student differs from what is paid to the city.
Expenses for the city:
He explained that the expenses for the city for the academic year 2018/2019 were between 100 thousand to 150 thousand pounds, but the real cost was the highest plan of the city since its inception- higher than 250 thousand pounds.
Dr. Sedqi pointed out that during the new academic year 2019/2020, the real cost will be less than 250 thousand pounds, but what a student will pay is less than 150 thousand pounds.
Percentage of graduates:
The percentage of graduates is as follows: 23% working in Egypt, 32% of postgraduate studies abroad, 18% of researchers in the city of Zewail, 23% of them in military service, and 4% working in the private sector.
The CEO said that many high school students failed to pass admission tests in the city, noting that the secondary school grades are not a criterion for entering the city or determining the future of students.
