Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned of the global food crisis because of Russia’s blockade at Black Sea ports, which prevents exports from being shipped to other countries.
“If due to Russian blockades we are unable to export our foodstuffs, the world will face an acute and severe food crisis and famine in many countries in Asia and Africa," he virtually addressed the delegations at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore.
Zelenskyy added that the food shortages could lead to political chaos and the overthrow of governments in some countries.
Since the beginning of the war, the Russian Navy has blockaded many Ukrainian ports, preventing the export of grain from the country, which is the fourth largest exporter of grain in the world. There are millions of tons of grain stuck in Ukraine.
Kyiv also accuses Russia of stealing large quantities of grain, while Moscow says its neighbor is responsible for the high food prices due to its refusal to clear mines around the ports.
Ukraine says it uses mines to defend itself from Russian warships.
