On Monday, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussed with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau the establishment of long-term defense ties between the two countries.

"For as long as it takes. That’s how long we’re going to provide Ukraine with support," Trudeau wrote on Twitter after a phone call with Zelenskyy.

He addressed the Ukrainian president, saying, "You have my word. And as Ukrainians remain resolute in the face of ongoing attacks, Canada will continue to be there with military, humanitarian, and financial aid.”

Zelenskyy also tweeted that he and Trudeau had discussed establishing a "long-term defense cooperation program" between the two countries.

Last month, Canada sent eight Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine to help it fend off the Russian offensive.

Ottawa announced earlier in February that it would double the number of tanks pledged to Kyiv.

In March, Trudeau announced that Canada would extend the mission to train Ukrainian combat engineers until October, adding that medical trainers would also be deployed.

Ottawa has allocated more than one billion Canadian dollars in military aid to Ukraine over the past year, including armored vehicles, surface-to-air missiles, howitzers and ammunition, as well as Leopard tanks.
