Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced plans to discuss the purchase of American military equipment with former US President Donald Trump, should they meet during the G7 Summit in Canada.

Speaking in Vienna on Monday, Zelensky emphasized Ukraine’s need for defensive systems as the war with Russia persists.

Zelensky stated that one of the key topics for discussion would be a defense package Ukraine wishes to acquire from Washington.

He also emphasized the crucial importance of maintaining unity between the United States and Europe, noting that he could not envision Ukraine continuing its resistance without US support.

The comments came during a joint press conference with Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen. The two leaders discussed long-term Western support for Ukraine, including humanitarian demining, energy recovery, food security, and infrastructure shelter projects.

Austria, which has maintained a neutral military stance, pledged €320 million in humanitarian aid to Ukraine and neighboring countries. Though not a NATO member, Van der Bellen stressed that Austria is politically engaged and not neutral in its values.

The Ukrainian delegation also explored partnerships with Austrian companies to assist in the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine.

Before the Russian invasion in February 2022, Austria was one of Ukraine’s key investors. Talks also addressed strengthening cooperation in healthcare and reconstruction, areas where Vienna’s expertise may play a role.

Despite Vienna’s efforts, Zelensky’s visit sparked criticism from Austria’s far-right Freedom Party. Its leader, Herbert Kickl, accused the government of jeopardizing Austria’s neutrality and foreign policy credibility by hosting the Ukrainian leader.
