The Japanese government has announced that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will participate today in a video meeting hosted by the current G7 leaders, with Tokyo at the helm.

Government spokesperson Hirokazu Matsuno told reporters that Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida "will host a G7 summit held via video.

In addition to the leaders of the G7 countries, Ukrainian President Zelensky will participate in the first part of the meeting."

Zelensky unexpectedly canceled a video address scheduled for Tuesday to the US Senate, where tough negotiations are ongoing regarding a new aid package for Ukraine, which Kyiv heavily relies on in its response to the Russian invasion.

According to the Japanese government spokesperson, G7 leaders will discuss "important issues for the international community, such as the situation in Ukraine, the Middle East, and the issue of artificial intelligence."
