In a significant diplomatic move, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed Kyiv’s willingness to support initiatives aimed at reducing regional tensions. Speaking during a press conference in Kyiv alongside NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, Zelensky confirmed that Ukraine is prepared to engage with "de-escalation steps" if proposed by international partners, particularly the United States.
Focus on Abu Dhabi Negotiations The President’s remarks come as high-level delegations from Ukraine, the United States, and Russia prepare for a second round of trilateral negotiations in Abu Dhabi. While originally scheduled for Sunday, the talks have been shifted to Wednesday and Thursday (February 4–5).
Zelensky emphasized that the Ukrainian team will be closely monitoring the information and concessions presented by the Russian delegation. "We will support steps to ease tension if there are similar proposals from the American side," Zelensky noted, adding that he remains in constant contact with his negotiating team to evaluate any potential breakthroughs.
Seeking Terms for a Sustainable End to War The Abu Dhabi framework follows an initial meeting held on January 23–24, which focused on the foundational conditions for ending the conflict. The upcoming sessions are viewed as a critical juncture for diplomatic efforts, as international mediators push for a tangible roadmap toward a ceasefire.
NATO Support Remains Stepped Up Standing alongside Secretary-General Rutte, Zelensky reiterated that while Ukraine is open to diplomatic paths for de-escalation, the nation continues to rely on the steadfast support of the NATO alliance to maintain its defensive capabilities. The visit by Rutte serves as a powerful signal of Western unity as the complex negotiations in the UAE begin.
