Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated, on Monday, that Moscow is ready to cooperate with Sri Lanka's new government once formed.
Zakharova affirmed that Russia hopes that Sri Lankan authorities adopt the necessary measures to handle the current national economic crisis, according to the ministry's statement.
Moscow is waiting for the formation of the new government committee and is ready to cooperate with it, the statement added.
Earlier this month, Sri Lanka’s President Gotabaya Rajapaksa called on Russian leader Vladimir Putin to help his country import fuel as it faces its worst economic crisis in seven decades.
“Had a very productive telecon with the Russian President Vladimir Putin. While thanking him for all the support extended by his govt to overcome the challenges of the past, I requested an offer of credit support to import fuel to #lka in defeating the current econ challenges,” Rajapaksa said.
On Saturday, Rajapaksa fled as angry protesters surround his residence, calling for his resignation amidst the worst economic crisis since 1948. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe summoned an emergency Cabinet meeting to discuss the situation and come to a swift resolution, ANI reported.
Wickremesinghe had told the meeting of party leaders that he would resign as soon as a new all-party government was formed. President Rajapaksa also agreed to resign following the massive demonstrations.
