The spokesperson of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Mohamed Fawzy announced that minister Dr. Ashraf Sobhy tested positive for Coronavirus.
Fawzy added that Sobhy was planning to travel to Cameron to support the Egyptian National Football Team in their game against Sudan's National Football team in the final round of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) group stage.
However, the minister won't be able to travel as he started his isolation period.
In the same context, several sports institutions responded to the news, wishing Sobhy a speedy recovery such as the Egyptian Olympic Committee that released a statement supporting the minister and wishing him good health.
The Egyptian National Football team will have their game against Sudan tonight at 9 pm. The team needs to win the match in order to qualify for the upcoming stage in the competition.
The seven-time AFCON champions began their 2021 campaign with a loss against Nigeria in a fast-paced game at the Roumdé Adjia Stadium in Garoua, Cameroon.
Both teams are considered among the favorites to win the month-long continental tournament.
Kelechi Iheanacho scored the game’s only goal in the half-hour mark to ensure the Super Eagles boosted their chances of finishing as Group D leaders.
The Egyptian national team secured a victory against Guinea Bissau in their second match in Group D.
