The South Korean prosecution has formally charged the ousted president, Yoon Suk-yeol, with rebellion over his brief imposition of martial law on December 3.

The charges come after a corruption investigation last week, which recommended that formal accusations be filed against the former leader, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.

The decision to charge Yoon followed a second request from a Seoul court on Saturday, which rejected the extension of his detention.

His failed attempt to impose martial law has significantly increased pressure on prosecutors to file charges and keep the former president in custody.

Yoon was arrested last week in a pre-dawn raid at his official residence on charges of rebellion, making him the first sitting South Korean president to face criminal detention, according to Agence France-Presse.

The martial law decree, issued by Yoon on December 3, was rescinded after just six hours when lawmakers stormed the parliament to overturn it. However, the move plunged South Korea into its worst political crisis in decades.

Yoon remains in a detention center in Seoul and has refused to cooperate with the criminal investigation into his martial law declaration.
