The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Yemen announced that its embassy in Damascus will officially resume operations starting Sunday, April 27, 2025.
Counselor Mohammed Azy Baakr has been appointed as the acting chargé d'affaires.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the ministry said the move comes under the directives of Dr. Shaea Mohsen Al-Zandani, Yemen’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, and Asaad Al-Shaibani, Syria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The reopening reflects the historic and strong ties between the two brotherly nations.
The statement emphasized that the restoration of the Yemeni embassy's operations marks a significant diplomatic milestone, especially following the takeover of the premises by Houthi militias in 2016 with the support of the former Syrian regime.
Yemen’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the reopening as a powerful symbol of the legitimate government's resilience and the collapse of disruptive and extremist agendas.
The ministry also expressed hope that the embassy’s reopening will usher in a new era of enhanced bilateral cooperation between Yemen and Syria across various fields, strengthening the longstanding bonds between the two countries.
