US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that imposing sanctions on China over Ukraine "is not necessary or appropriate at this point."
“I don’t think it’s necessary or appropriate at this point,” the minister said in an interview with CNBC about the potential sanctions on China, referring to the current talks between senior administration officials and Beijing to make sure that it understands the US’s position.
“We would be very concerned if they supplied Russia with weapons or if they tried to circumvent the sanctions that we have imposed against the Russian financial system and the central bank,” she added.
Two days ago, the Chinese Foreign Minister confirmed that Russia is an important G20 member and cannot be expelled from G20 by any member.
“The G20 is the main forum for international economic cooperation, and Russia is an important member in it, and no member in the group has the right to deprive any country of its membership,” Chinese Spokesperson of Foreign Ministry Wang Wenbin said in a statement on Wednesday.
Earlier, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said that Washington studying with the allies about excluding Russia from the G20, saying that the Russian Federation is no longer able to conduct business as usual in international institutions and the international community.
