On Friday, Xiaomi introduced on Twitter  “Mi Air Charge Technology,” a wireless charging system that is able to charge devices within a radius of several meters.

"We're excited to bring you the remote charging technology - Mi Air Charge Technology! Charge multiple devices simultaneously while you're gaming, walking around, or even when something's in the way, no strings attached. Another giant leap forward in wireless charging technology!" Xiaomi tweeted.

Mi Air Charge Technology has five phase interference antennas built-in, which can accurately detect the location of the smartphone. A phase control array composed of 144 antennas transmits millimeter-wide waves directly to the phone through beamforming.

The company also developed on the smartphone side, a miniaturized antenna array with a built-in “beacon antenna” and “receiving antenna array”. Beacon antenna broadcasts position information with low power consumption. The receiving antenna array composed of 14 antennas converts the millimeter-wave signal emitted by the charging pile into electric energy through the rectifier circuit.

The technology will also work with smartwatches and fitness bracelets.

Xiaomi confirmed that Mi Air Charge is just a tech demo at this stage, so it is not clear if the company will be able to overcome the implementational and structural market problems faced by other vendors that have shown off no-contact wireless charging prototypes.

The company also aims to make living rooms truly wireless with speakers, lamps, and smart home devices all being powered by the same remote system.
