The newly emerged Omicron subvariant, XBB 1.5, caused more than 43% of the latest detected COVID-19 infections in the US, Al-Ain reported on Saturday.
The early data showed that 30% of the detected COVID-19 cases in the first week of January were by XBB. The recorded cases show a new surge, compared to last week.
XBB.1.5 was detected in at least 23 countries, including the UK. But according to the most recent data, it accounts for only 4% of the latest COVID-19 infections in England.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the XBB became more dominant than the previous subvariants of Omicron in the US.
