Women's rights activist Freshta Kohistani was shot dead, Thursday, by unknown gunmen in northern Kapisa province, according to Afghan Ministry of Interior.
Interior Ministry spokesman Tariq Aryan said that Kohistani was assassinated by unknown gunmen, who were on a motorbike, in the Kohistan district of Kapisa, noting that Kohistani’s brother was also wounded in the attack.
Just 10 days ago, the activist posted on her Facebook page that she was “under threats,” urging the authorities to take the matter seriously.
“It's been late, I don't have a good time, my life has become bitter and I spend my moments with fear and anxiety, many times from the Ministry of Interior, the person of the minister, the head of the fight against crimes, the head of criminal investigation, the head of national security,” she wrote on her Facebook page.
“I did that I'm under threats. Pay attention but they disregarded me, I'm not a young man of fear and anxiety, my fear for the future of my family is from my colleagues who will remain destiny after me and what will they do in this ruin? I ask dear officials to take my issue seriously once again. Otherwise, every bad consequences and my blood are on the neck of those who know how much I am in threats and security problems, but they disregarded me.”
Mahfouz Safi, a local politician in the governorate, told the German news agency DPA that the prominent activist was visiting poor villagers to help them.
No one took responsibility for the attack; however, multiple attacks took place in Kabul in recent months, including on educational institutions that killed 50 people, most of them students.
