On Easter Sunday, a woman died and three others were sent to hospital after being rescued from the water at a beach on New South Wales' south coast.
Surf lifesavers and members of the public had to rescue ten persons from the ocean at Surf Beach, about 8 kilometres south of Batemans Bay.
Emergency services were summoned shortly after 2 p.m. to reports of a group of swimmers in trouble, according to NSW police.
A 40-year-old woman was treated at the site before being evacuated to Batemans Bay Hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after.
Three additional swimmers, a woman and two men, were evaluated on the spot and sent to the hospital, with one guy being evacuated to Canberra.
The other swimmers did not need to be admitted to the hospital.
A check of the beach was done, according to NSW police, to determine if there were any additional swimmers in need of assistance.
"An overhead check of the beaches was done by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and the Surf Life Saving Australia Helicopter to ensure no one else required assistance," police said.
"South Coast police officers have begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the occurrence, and a report will be prepared for the coroner's information."
