A 61-year-old woman was killed when a gondola cabin detached and plunged down a mountainside at the Engelberg ski resort in central Switzerland on Wednesday.

The cabin, certified to carry up to eight passengers, broke loose at about 2,000 meters (6,560 feet), sliding and rolling several times before coming to a stop against a bush, authorities said.

Rescue operations were complicated by the high altitude, prompting the deployment of a helicopter. Police confirmed that an investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the crash, which is believed to be linked to strong winds.

At the time, between 100 and 200 people were traveling on other gondolas along the same cable route. All passengers were safely evacuated, and affected gondolas were temporarily suspended, with additional closures due to strong wind conditions.

Meteorological reports indicated gusts reaching up to 130 kilometers per hour (80 mph) in exposed areas above 1,800 meters.

Despite sunny conditions, the severe winds likely contributed to the tragic accident, highlighting the risks posed by high-altitude alpine transport during adverse weather.
